Walk ‘n’ Roll: AHS starts off walk-a-thon season

By Meredeth Barzen

The crocuses are out, the trees are budding, the dog-friendly patios have once again placed water bowls outside—these signs can only mean one thing: It’s walk-a-thon fundraiser season, and Animal Humane Society’s Walk for Animals is poised to get things started with a “woof” on Saturday, May 1.

A past Walk for Animals participant gets festive.

A past Walk for Animals participant gets festive.

The folks at AHS have been doing this for 36 years now, and they’ve got the whole camaraderie/pledge-raising/pet-loving thing down to a science by now. The largest Minnesota animal fundraiser and the nation’s largest human/pet walk was created as a way for the community to get more involved in AHS’s work and support the animals that need their help, says AHS’ Carrie Libera. “And, of course, to celebrate the animals in our own lives!” she adds.

If you like numbers, here are some stats from last year: Roughly 8,000 walkers and 4,000 animals participated in last year’s walk, raising more than $1 million to support adoption, rescue, outreach and training efforts at AHS.

This year, AHS’ goal is to raise $1.1 million to support the nearly 35,000 unwanted, homeless, and neglected animals AHS cares for each year at their five Twin Cities locations. Seventy percent of AHS’ operating budget comes from donations, which means the public’s generosity is crucial to the organization’s success.

There will be plenty of diversions for both you and Rover, including a “Flealess Market” of pet and people vendors, games for you and your dog, the fabulous Radio Disney Dancers, a pet microchip and nail trim clinic, pet contests, recognition awards and more. Plus, you’ll get to mingle with all the other pet-lovers and critters at the event—Carrie says creatures of all stripes attend, from parrots to pot-bellied pigs.

If you’ve procrastinated and think it’s too late to sign up, volunteer, or raise pledges, you’re just plain wrong. You can sign up as an individual or form a team, and you can raise pledges in person or online. “Also, for those people who don’t want to raise pledges and walk, but still want to help out, we also have some volunteer opportunities still available for this year’s walk. We are especially looking for people who are interested in helping out with traffic and crowd control,” Carrie says, pointing out that it takes more than 500 volunteers to organize and produce the Walk.

And if you’re curious (we, being nerdy and trivia-obsessed, certainly are): As of Monday, April 12, there were 2,331 walkers registered for this year’s event—734 more than had signed up at this point last year—with an average of 50 walkers registering each day.

The Deets:

Where: Animal Humane Society, 845 Meadow Lane North, Golden Valley

Route: Begins at AHS, walks north into Theodore Wirth Park and then back; approximately 5 miles, but walkers can turn back at any time.

When: Saturday, May 1, 2010

8:30 a.m.—Registration and activities begin

10 a.m.—Opening rally and walk begins

Post-walk activities run until 2 p.m.

And check out this nifty chart Carrie sent along breaking down your contributions’ impact:

Where a Walker’s Contribution Goes

$10,000—Supports the operating expenses of our Woodbury location for six days

$5,000—Helps fund a cruelty investigation and animal rescue

Art for Animal Rescue

When artist Jessie Marianiello adopted her Chesapeake mix Louis from the Animal Humane Society a couple years ago, her heart was “turned inside out, for good.” So much so, that she was inspired to create Stray Dog Arts.

So what did this incredibly talented artist and rescue dog mom decide to do? Give back, big-time, through a fundraising project and upcoming art exhibition called “Animals of AHS.”

Do you have a pet who was rescued by the Animal Humane Society? Or would you simply like a significant portion of your commission (20%) to be donated to the rescue efforts of AHS? If so, learn more here. And know that if you commission a portrait before July 31st, 2009, your painting will be included in the October 2009 public exhibition at Now Boarding, AHS’s new state-of-the-art doggie daycare and pet boarding facility located adjacent to MSP International Airport. (Stay tuned for information on the opening celebration and reception.)

Now Boarding: Now Open, Now Awesome

By Meredeth Barzen

File under: ‘Why didn’t someone think of this sooner?’

nowboarding3
Two previously unrelated things: 1) The MSP International Airport, and 2) A brand-new, state-of-the-art doggie daycare and overnight pet boarding facility. At last, the twain shall meet!

In a move so natural it was almost inevitable, some very smart people created Now Boarding, the second half of the above equation that’s right next to the MSP Airport’s parking lot and is so swanky, you’ll find yourself asking if they let people stay there as well.

The facility, which is affiliated with the Animal Humane Society, stands apart from other boarding operations for many reasons:

Now Boarding's pet pool: Club Med for dogs

Now Boarding’s pet pool: Club Med for dogs

 • There’s a pool. A pool, for Pete’s sake! Add an umbrella drink to the water bowl and your dog’s halfway to Aruba.
 • Your pup can choose from any one of 4,000 square feet of irrigated, synthetic K9 grass upon which to do its business.
 • They’re a Pet Haven foster facility, so in addition to taking care of your lovely animals, they’re providing food, water and shelter to plenty of homeless animals in the area.
 • The outdoor/indoor space can be rented out for events, Meet Up groups, or any other pet shenanigans you can cook up.
 • You can park there, drop of Spot, and be shuttled to the airport in time to make your flight. The ultimate in handy-dandy!

Want an inside look at Now Boarding’s new digs? Attend Dogs and Drinks “Jump into Spring” event on May 30th. We’ll be there and would love to meet you!

METRO Magazine Dogg Party

Holy raw hide! Nothing could be more fun than a night on the town that is all about the dog. We had a blast at the METRO magazine Dogg Party at the Nomad World Pub in Minneapolis. A live viewing of the Westminster Kennel Club 2008 Dog Show, cocktails, gourmet food for dogs and people, dog-themed trophies, a photo booth, prizes and lots and lots of sniffing were just a few of the highlights! METRO really pulled out all the tricks.

Michelle and Tim from Well Pet Foods

Animal Humane SocietySidewalk Dog was proud to be alongside sponsors that included Michelle Burt’s Well Pet Foods (picture left with husband Tim and dogs Clyde and Sally), as well as event beneficiary Animal Humane Society (pictured right).

And it was such a pleasure for me to serve as the event emcee working alongside Shana and Amanda from METRO Magazine (pictured below). They both put on a great event to connect dog lovers to the city we life that we all love.

METRO does not currently have other dog parties planned, but will surely be considering it after such a great night!
