• Some very cool nonprofits were born, including: The Pet Project, keeping people and their pets together in hard times; MN SNAP, providing low-cost spaying and neutering; MnPAW, working to reduce euthanasia of adoptable animals; Start Seeing Black Dogs, shedding light on Black Dog Syndrome.
• We love it when dog-friendly businesses and nonprofits team up to benefit each other à la Frattallone’s Ace Hardware’s Dog Days of Summer event. For every person who brought their pup into the store during the month of August, Frattallone’s donated $1 to Homeward Bound Dog Rescue. Find out how much was raised.
• More and more restaurants allowed (dare we say welcomed?) dogs on their patios. Check our map of dog-friendly patios, read about a few of our favorites and think spring!
• We got to know some famous Minnesotans and the four-leggeds that make them say “Who’s my fruffy wittle fuzzy bear?” in Almost Famous Dogs and Almost Famous Dogs: Part Deux.
• Minnesota got its first indoor dog park with the arrival of Dog City Dog Park in New Hope. (For outdoor options, check out our dog park map and read about a few of our urban and suburban faves.)
• The Sidewalk Dog Directory grew big time in 2009. From trainers to daycares to pet supply stores to animal communicators to poop scoopers, we’ve got you covered.
• Even we were surprised, delighted and a bit overwhelmed by all the dog-friendly happenings of 2009. Did you take your dog to the Saints game on Mother’s Day? Walk your dog in the Doggone Early Dog Walk at Mall of America? Dine with your dog at Sushi with Your Poochie at Tiger Sushi 2? Party with your dog at the Animal Humane Society’s Whisker Whirl? Drink with your dog at K9-Connection’s Beer with Your Buddy? Practice yoga with your dog at Zen Pooch Doga? Pose with your dog at Tails Up: The Pet Project’s First Annual Holiday Pet Food Drive? Celebrate National Pit Bull Awareness Day with your dog at All-American Dog Fest? Stroll with your dog at Woofstock? Run with your dog in the Monster Dash 5K-9? (Okay, we’ll stop now.)
• We learned firsthand that just like in people, dental disease in dogs can lead to heart, lung and kidney problems. In other words, dogs with healthy mouths live longer.
• We love shop dogs. After all, they can turn ordinary stores into living, breathing members of the community. South Lyndale Liquors’ St. Bernard Abbey was the quintessential shop dog—respectful, sweet, a treat for customers and a friend for employees.
• We were introduced to some particularly amazing dogs, including: Jerry, the “House Dog” at the Ronald McDonald House; Hector, a former Michael Vick dog who recently appeared at a St. Paul elementary school as part of a lesson on empathy and compassion; Sunny, assistant and best friend to autistic siblings Ellie and Ben.

Whoa, right?! And that’s just for starters!

Late last month, the Mall of America was taken over by pooches and their people at the first annual Doggone Early Dog Walk, benefiting Home for Life Animal Sanctuary. The walk kicked off The Art of the Dog, Home for Life’s annual holiday display of dog statues and doghouses designed and adorned by local artists.

Jessie Marianiello of Stray Dog Arts is among this year’s participating artists. She created an MoMDA—Museum of Modern Dog Art—doghouse, which features painted portraits of Marni Hughes’s and Keith Marler’s dogs from FOX 9 News. “This is a space for dogs to relax and contemplate the finer things in life. Because I truly believe that animals recognize beauty, the inside of the house is decorated as a miniature art gallery complete with framed artwork. The exterior is embellished with artwork that I’ve completed within the past year and incorporated into a museum-esque architectural design,” Marianiello says.

The Art of the Dog will remain on display in Nordstrom Court until January 4. The entire exhibit is for sale, so be sure to check it out when shopping for that extra special but hard-to-buy-for dog lover on your list. Proceeds from the sale will benefit Home for Life.

If you love dogs and wine—we at Sidewalk Dog sure do—you’re in luck, because Home for Life Animal Sanctuary recently introduced a private label wine called Wet Nose wines. Available exclusively at The Wine Market (locations in Mendota Heights and Woodbury), Wet Nose wines are reasonably priced at $12 per bottle, and 20% of Wet Nose wine sales are donated to Home for Life.

Here’s what Home for Life’s Web site says about their wines and their label dogs, HFL residents Greta and Beauty:

Wet Nose Red: From California, this wine is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon. Aromas and flavors of cherry, dark berries, wild strawberries, chocolate and subtle hints of toasty vanilla spice from the oak. A full-bodied, crowd-pleasing red that will be a great accompaniment to hearty dishes.

Label Dog Greta: An intelligent, energetic Keeshond, Greta came to Home For Life through another shelter, where she had waited for nearly two years to find a new home. Greta now lives in HFL’s feline leukemia facility and dutifully performs her tasks of greeting visitors and providing security for the cats. In early 2009, Greta became certified through Therapy Dogs International and loves her job visiting patients at University of Minnesota Medical Center and University of Minnesota Amplatz Children’s Hospital.

Wet Nose White: A classic California Chardonnay, this wine shows beautiful aromas of tropical fruit, baked apple and lush spice. On the palate, it has bright acidity and a creamy mouthfeel. Filled with rich flavors of baked apple pie, caramel, vanilla, cinnamon and nutmeg.

Label Dog Beauty: Beauty’s name matches not just her appearance, but her loving temperament and intelligence as well. When she came to Home for Life, Beauty, a Husky-Border Collie mix, was already a guide dog to her companion Pepper, a blind cattle dog who followed the bells on Beauty’s collar to get around. Beauty and Pepper were surrendered to HFL by a rural Minnesota shelter that took them in when their family had to abandon their home due to domestic abuse. Beauty is presently working hard with volunteers to become a certified therapy dog through Therapy Dogs International.

At 7 a.m. on Sunday, November 22, before shopping hours commence, the Mall of America will be taken over by hounds and their humans at the first annual Doggone Early Dog Walk, benefiting Home for Life Animal Sanctuary. Dog owners will be able to walk ’til they drop (or at least until they get to the refreshments table) to support the animals that Home for Life cares for and the community outreach programs it organizes.
